Limits

Fixed Limit

When poker is played with a Fixed Limit, players can only raise three times per betting round. When three raises have been made, the only options left for the remaining players are to fold or to call. The raises and bets are always equivalent to the size of the blinds.

e.g. If the blinds are 1 and 2, the maximum raise is 2.

When the maximum amount of bets have been made (3) the pot is “capped”. When the next betting round begins three new raises are allowed.

No Limit

As the title implies, there are no limits. You can always bet all your remaining chips. The minimum bet amount is the same as the big blind.

e.g. If player A has 12,000 chips and bets all of their remaining chips – player B can still call with their 5,000 in chips. Player A immediately gets 7,000 in chips back since that’s what they have left after covering player B’s bet of 5,000.

Pot Limit

Once again the name of the game tells you all about the betting structure. The maximum amount a player is allowed to bet is the equivalent of the amount that is in the pot at the time of play – and the two big blinds.

e.g. If you are the first player to act and the blinds are 1 and 2 – the pot is now 3. If you want to raise, you can bet the pot (3) plus twice the amount of last bet (in this case the big blind, 2). So, we’ve got the pot (3) and double the amount of the last bet (4), a total of 7.
