History of Major League Baseball
Major League Baseball (MLB) is one of the major sporting leagues of the United States of America. Major League Baseball is played in accordance with the rules laid down in the Major League Baseball Constitution. Major League Baseball together organizes both the National League and the American League. Thirty teams, twenty nine teams from the United States of America and one team from Canada come under MLB. The World Baseball Classic is also managed by MLB together with the International Baseball Federation. The tournament begins on the first Sunday of every April and ends on the first Sunday of October. One hundred and sixty two games are played approximately in each season.
Major League Baseball was founded in the year 1869. The Cincinnati Red Stockings team was also formed in the same year. Major League Baseball has a division of two leagues, the American League comprising of fourteen teams and the National League with sixteen teams. East, Central and West are further divisions within the two leagues. In 1998, The Milwaukee Brewers of American League migrated to the National League make both the teams into even-numbered leagues. The World Series that began in 1903 is the annual end-of-year championships between the two leagues. The All Star game is an exhibition match played between players from the National League and American League led by the managers of the earlier World Series teams.
In baseball, players score runs after hitting a ball thrown by the pitcher. Statistics show that the New York Knickerbockers became the first team to wear a uniform followed by other teams. The most valuable player of the All-Star Game is awarded the Arch Ward Trophy every year. Jamie Moyer, Trevor Hoffman, Greg Maddux, Tom Glavine, Johan Santana, Cole Hamels, and Pedro Martinez are some of the prominent baseball players. The Philadelphia Phillies are the defending champions of the World Series having won it against Tampa Bay in 2008. With 26 titles, the New York Yankees have won the most number of World Series Championships.
