History of Coca-Cola League 1

Football League One is also called League One or Coca-Cola League 1. League One is one of the divisions of the Football League, the other two being the League Championship and League Two. In the English Soccer League System, the Football League One is the third-highest division. This League was originally founded in the year 1920 and it was then called Division 3. From 1921 to 1958, this League was termed as Division Three North/South. The name Division 3 again came into existence in the years 1958 until 1992. In 1992, it was renamed as Division Three that was prevalent until 2004. During the 2004-05 Football League season, Football League One was renamed from Second Division.

Football League One consists of twenty four clubs and each one clashes with the other club twice, once at home and once away. Points are awarded for each win, loss or draw. At the conclusion of this sports tournament, ranks are awarded to every team based on their performance. The top two teams along with the winner of the play-offs are promoted to the Football League Championship. The teams that ended up as the last three in the Football League Championship are relegated to the League One. Those teams that end up in last four in League One are demoted those spots are replaced by the first three teams in Football League 2 and the winner of the Football League Two play-offs.

Luton Town emerged triumphant in Football League One 2004-05 season defeating Hull City. With twenty-seven goals each, Stuart Elliot of Hull City and Dean Windass of Bradford City were the top scorers in the 2004-05 Football League One season. The more recent winner of Football League One is Leicester City in the 2008-09 season Leicester City defeated Peterborough United in the final and they were promoted to the Football League Championship. Simon Cox of Swindon Town and Rickie Lambert of Bristol Rovers are the top scorers of the season having booted twenty-nine goals each. The teams that were dethroned to the League Two are Northampton Town, Crewe Alexandra, Cheltenham Town and Hereford United.

The 2009-10 edition of Football League One began in August 2009. It is scheduled to go on until May 2010. Leeds United along with Charlton Athletic with enough points has paved their way to the Football League Championship 2010-11.
