History of the 2nd Bundesliga
2nd Bundesliga holds the second highest place in the hierarchy of German Football.It is preceded by Bundesliga. This version of the soccer league began in 1974, eight years after the formation of the Bundesliga on July 28, 1962 in Dortmund. In fact, the Austrian football league is also called Bundesliga. 2nd Bundesliga is currently governed by the German Football League (DFL). This league underwent several changes in the format after the reunification of Germany. In its founding year, 2nd Bundesliga consisted of forty clubs that were equally divided in to the North and South leagues. In 1981, 2nd Bundesliga was contested by twenty teams. Twenty four teams participated in the 1992-93 season of 2nd Bundesliga.
Ever since the 1994-95 season, eighteen clubs have participated in the 2nd Bundesliga tournament. The top two teams in this football league are given direct entry to the Bundesliga and the third team to be promoted is decided after the play-offs. Consequently, the teams that rank in the last three spots in the Bundesliga are demoted to the 2nd Bundesliga. Prior to 2007-08, the last four teams were demoted to the regional leagues. At present, the clubs that finish last two in this league are relegated to the 3rd Liga and the third team to be demoted is determined by exit play-offs, whereas the top two teams in the third division league are promoted to the 2nd Bundesliga.
The 2008-09 season, which is the thirty-fifth season began on August 15, 2008 and went on until May 24, 2009. Securing sixty-eight points, SC Freighburg emerged as winners of the 2008-09 2nd Bundesliga. With twenty-one wins, eight losses and five draws, they realized their dreams of advancing to the Bundesliga for the 2009-10 season. FSV Mainz 05 with sixty three points was the runners-up team who also got promoted to the Bundesliga. Wehen Wiesbaden, Ingolstadt and Osnabruck were the teams that were exiled. Benjamin Auer of Alemannia Aachen, Cedric Makiadi of MSV Duisburg and Marek Mintal of FC Nuremberg were the top goal scorers of the 2008-09 season.

The 2009–10 2nd Fußball-Bundesliga, the thirty-sixth edition of the league, began on August 7, 2009 and is scheduled to go on until May 9, 2010.
