History of the Dfb Pokal

The DFB-Pokal is an annual, elimination football tournament held in Germany. The competition accommodates teams from different soccer leagues across the country. A total of 64 teams participate in the DFB-Pokal tournament spread across the top three football divisions, namely the Bundesliga, 2nd Bundesliga and the 3rd Liga as well as regional football associations. The tournament is also known as the German Football-Federation Cup. The DFB-Pokal football tournament was first held in 1935, and it was initially called Tschammer-Pokal. FC Nuremberg and Schalke 04 clashed in the final of the first edition, and the former prevailed 2-0 over its opponent.

Due to the Second World War, the tournament was not staged for ten years. The final of this grand knock out soccer tournament has been staged at the Olympic stadium in Berlin since 1985. The silverware presented to the winner of the DFB-Pokal football tournament is one of the best around. Made of gold plated sterling silver and embedded with gemstones, it is valued at around 100,000 Euros. Bayern Munich has been the most successful team in the history of the DFB-Pokal football championship with 14 titles and has remained a cut above the rest. Werder Bremen comes in at second with 6 wins and has ended up second best on three occasions. Schalke 04, FC Nuremberg, FC Köln, and Eintracht Frankfurt each have four trophies to their credit.

The DFB-Pokal football tournament is a highly respected tournament and the teams take a lot of pride in playing and winning the tournament. The DFB-Pokal 2007–08 season final was a nail biting thriller as it went into extra time. Before the game, odds heavily favoured the Bayern Munich team. The punters were all betting on Bayern Munich winning their 14th DFB-Pokal trophy. When Bayern Munich went ahead in the 11th minute, it was going according to script. However, in a dramatic turnaround, against all odds, Borussia Dortmund scored in stoppage time to offer a new twist to the tale. The game went into extra time; Italian Luca Toni turned out to be the hero for Bayern Munich as he scored in the 103rd minute to win the championship for Bayern Munich. Werder Bremen won the 2008–09 edition of the DFB-Pokal football tournament beating Bayern Leverkusen 1-0.
