History of the UEFA Champions League

The UEFA Champions League, also known as the Champions League or the European Cup, is Europe’s famous football club competition that is conducted every year by the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA). The UEFA Champions League was introduced in the year 1955, and the interesting fact is that this soccer tournament was not founded by the UEFA. It was a time when UEFA was more inclined on designing a football tournament among national teams. However, Gabriel Hanot, who was the then editor of a French sports magazine called L’Equipe, teamed up with colleague Jacques Ferran to design a football competition among the soccer clubs across Europe. Against all odds, they developed a format by which a soccer tournament was to be played under floodlights on Wednesdays. This was the origin of the world renowned UEFA Champions League.

The main idea of L’Equipe was to include the soccer clubs that had the widest fan-following in Europe. The UEFA Champions League initially had a knockout format, where each football club played two matches, one home and one away. Only those soccer clubs that scored above the qualifying score went into the next round. The teams that won the respective national league championship and the previous tournament champion were allowed to participate in the league, which in turn limited the number of clubs participating in the tournament. This format continued till 1992, after which a new format was adopted. In this format, an additional group stage was included. This resulted in thirty two European football clubs taking part in the competition instead of the usual eight, and soccer matches were held on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

Previous UEFA Champions League season(s)

Lisbon hosted the first ever UEFA Champions League football match, which was a 3-3 draw between Sporting Clube de Portugal and FK Partizan. The tournament’s first five Championship Cups were won by Real Madrid CF. After this series of victories, Spanish fans were betting on this club to win the sixth edition as well, but the club’s winning streak was broken by the SL Benfica soccer club. So, far Real Madrid and AC Milan football clubs have been the most successful in the UEFA Champions League; the former emerged victorious nine times and the latter seven times. In the 2008-2009 edition of the UEFA Champions League, the defending champions Manchester United were up against Barcelona in the final. Many were betting on Manchester United to win this match, but Barcelona went on to beat their opponents against all odds, making it their second victory in this tournament since 2000.
