What is the IPL Format?

Ten teams compete in the IPL 15, each representing a different Indian city. The 2022 competition sees the Chennai Super Kings, Delhi Capitals, Kings XI Punjab, Kolkata Knight Riders, Mumbai Indians, Rajasthan Royals, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Sunrises Hyderabad and two new teams Lucknow Super Giants and Gujarat Titans swinging it out against each other. Each team will play each other twice (home and away) in a league format, before the top four teams enter the play-offs.

The top two teams at the end of the league phase play each other in one qualifier, and the third placed teams plays the fourth placed in another qualifier. The winner of the first qualifier automatically qualifies for the final. Then the loser of the first qualifier then plays the winner of the second qualifier in the Eliminator round. The winner of this match qualifies for the final.

The current IPL champions are the Chennai Super Kings, who defeated the Kolkata Knight Riders by 27 runs in the spectacular 2021 final. Mumbai Indians has been the most successful team in IPL history, having claimed the title five times before, but Chennai Super Kings are a close second with having claimed the title 4 times now – their fearsome line-up featuring the likes of Ravindra Jadeja, Devon Conway, Moeen Ali and M S Dhoni.

IPL 2022 Auction

With the 2022 IPL auction, Ishan Kishan became the second most expensive Indian player to be bought in IPL for a whopping 15.25 crores bid, as Mumbai Indians resigned the young wicket-keeper-batsman. Shreyas Iyer was pulled in by Kolkata Knight Riders for an impressive 12.25 crores, while Chennai Super Kings grabbed Deepak Chahar for a massive sum of 14 crores.

The English all-rounder Liam Livingstone became the most expensive overseas cricketer to be picked, as Punjab Kings spent 11.5 crores to bring him to their team, while Tim David and Jofra Archer were both bagged by Mumbai Indians for 8.25 and 8 crores respectively.

Sunrisers Hyderabad added two great all-rounders - West Indian Romario Shepherd and South African Marco Jansen – to their squad, while Rajasthan added the four overseas players – Rassie van der Dussen, Nathan Coulter-Nile, James Neesham and Daryl Mitchell during final bidding rounds.

Who are Favourites in the 2022 IPL betting markets?

Royal Rajasthan is one of the favourites coming into this tournament owing to its mighty team selection, while Punjab Kings also seems to be very promising with its line-up of star performers acquired in the mega auction. Delhi Capitals boasts of a superb top order as well, but of course, if any of these teams are to triumph, they must steal the IPL crown from the formidable four-time champion Chennai Super Kings.

What is the new IPL 2022 Schedule?
